The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have announced that new domain names will start to become available in the first quarter of 2010. Some groups are ready to apply for terms like .food, .wine, .paris, .london, .music and .sport, while others are planning to apply for regions (.africa) and charities (.green).
For example. Toyota could create 'europe.toyota' and 'usa.toyota' or even targeted domains for different markets such as 'suppliers.toyota' and 'dealers.toyota'.
ICANN says the new domains will boost choice and competition on the internet but there are concerns about trademark protection. Particular establishments may use these new domains to lure people into visiting their websites which could be used to create such attacks.
Research was conducted on 1,000 consumers and one in five (19%) said an extension such as .microsoft would be memorable. Considering only 24% think .com is memorable, this shows the potential for future top-level domains.
I think these new domains could take over big time, but then again, the internet is always changing so keep an eye.
