Twitter growth tops 1,000%

Internet statistician comScore is reporting that Twitter reached almost ten million unique visitors in February - a 700% increase on February 2008.

The growth is even more spectacular in the United States, where comScore reports a growth of more than 1,000% a year, from fewer than a million users in February 2008 to four million in February this year.

The site has become something of a media darling since the turn of the year, perhaps explaining why Twitter has almost doubled its traffic since December 2008, when it had around five million unique visitors per month.

Also significant is the breakdown of Twitter's visitors: comScore claims that 45-54 year-olds make up Twitter's largest demographic.

"With those aged 25 and older representing a much bigger segment of the population than the under-25 crowd, it might help explain why Twitter has expanded its reach so broadly so quickly over the past few months," Sarah Radwanick, Comscore's senior marketing and communications analyst claims in a blog post.
