Twitter has quickly become one of the top dogs in the social networking loop but now they have recently been talking about advertising.
Advertising will be included on Twitter for the first time and companies that want to benefit from this service will be able to buy the keywords they consider relevant. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said on the Twitter blog that “Promoted Tweets will be clearly labelled as ‘promoted’ when an advertiser is paying, but in every other respect they will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand. Promoted Tweets will also retain all the functionality of a regular Tweet including replying, retweeting, and favouriting.”
The social networking site said advertisers would be able to buy "Promoted Tweets" that will appear on Twitter's search results pages. Biz Stone said they would not be traditional adverts. They must be Tweets that "resonate with users" and be part of conversations. Twitter has already signed up big named organisations such as Sony Pictures, Starbucks and US retailer Best Buy.
Christine Overby, Vice President of interactive marketing at research company Forrester said "There is a risk that users may get turned off by too much advertising,"
"But I think this risk is easy to manage - they can look at how Google for example has handled this."
Keen on not to push his Tweeters away, Biz Stone said that if users did not interact with Promoted Tweets by replying to them, "favoriting" them or retweeting them, they would "disappear".
This idea could put off some people from using Twitter, for the simple fact that some people do not like ads plastered everywhere. Also, if Twitter were to feel a slight dip in users, I don't think it would be a massive deal as at the end of the day, Twitter will be making a fair amount of money from other companies wishing to promote their brand and up their profile online.
