Google to sell its very own smartphone

It looks like the all-mighty giant Google is set to follow in Apple's footsteps and start distributing its own Android smartphone, known as the "Nexus One".

Up until now Google have left the design and distribution of Android smartphones to partners such as HTC and Motorola. But Google feel that the varying quality of handsets and lack of control over the end-user experience appears to have convinced Google to cut out the middleman.

According to 'The Wall Street Journal', the company has already leaked a prototype into the world for employees to test. Photographs of the 'Nexus One' have already begun to appear on Twitter.

The Nexus One is still being manufactured by HTC and reports claim that it's noticeably slimmer.

Google will sell the 'Nexus One' directly over the internet instead of mobile phone retailers and networks, which means that buyers will be forced to pay top whack for the handset up front.

The search giant may have been stung into action because of claims that Android is failing to catch on in Europe. Recent reports show that sales are indeed rising steadily in Europe and also claims that consumers steer clear of the Google OS because they simply don't understand what Android is.
