First off the blocks to form a relationship with Twitter and Facebook is Microsoft's Bing search engine. Although a Facebook deal isn't official yet, it's thought Bing will be showing status updates in real time in a similar to way what it is already being done with Twitter (in Beta release). However, the deal is non-exclusive, so Google and Yahoo are likely to follow suit soon.
From a users perspective, Twitter's search is very basic, with search results listed chronologically. By handing over the task to a search engine like Bing, a more advanced algorithm is used. Now you can search by relevance, with a pre-dominant ranking factor being how many followers a user has on Twitter...
