Microsoft's MSN search engine branding has been somewhat varied over the past few years where its been trying to fit in with the rest of the MSN's image. With these constant changes, they decided to drop the function to allow webmasters to see how many backlinks their search engine recognised. However, this has finally been rectified with the launch of their new Bing search engine.
Microsoft's answer to Google came through MSN (Microsoft Network), the umbrella name for a host of their online services. First it was called 'MSN Search', then became 'Windows Live Search' before being shortened to simply 'Live Search'.
Live Search looked like a good search engine, with the integration of their Google AdWords rival called 'adCenter'. However, in June 2009 Microsoft decided the use of "Live" wasn't working and so the search engine was renamed as Bing. Although, they now have chosen to call it a "decision engine." You can find more about whether its marketing nonsense or a search engine worth using by seeing our introductory article on Bing...
