Why is Google so important?

Bookmark and Share

It's no secret that Google dominates the headlines whenever someone mentions search engines. In fact, to Google something has replaced the word 'search' in the same way people refer to vacuum cleaners as 'hoovers.'

So why is a Google, a company famous for it's lack of advertising, so dominant?

In the United States, Google accounts for a massive 65% of the search engine market according to the New York Times. Lagging behind with a combined 28%, is Yahoo and Microsoft. Considering these are also big players, it's quite a gap.

In the UK, statistics from Hitwise make glum reading for the rival search engines too. Google.co.uk has a 78% share of the market. Google.com is second place with 12%, whilst Yahoo UK takes bronze with a rather paltry 3.6%.

The question is then, how did Google become so popular? This is subjective for many, but undoubtedly the majority must have thought Google's algorithm provided the best results. It's also always remained plain and simple to use, so anyone new to the internet would be a fan.

Google also introduced free tools including the handy toolbar and Gmail onilne email service. Away from the technology side, Google also has a youthful, friendly image. Companies like Microsoft are almost considered evil in comparison!

So what does this mean to you, the website owner? Put simply, your online marketing efforts should focus on Google. Ranking well on Yahoo or Microsoft's Bing isn't enough. If you want traffic, you need to be on Google.
